About the real exam
In Pennsylvania you must pass a vision test and a knowledge test before you receive a learner’s permit. The knowledge test covers traffic signs, the state’s driving laws and safe-driving practices.
You can apply for a learner’s permit at age 16. After passing the knowledge test you receive a permit valid for one year. Drivers under 18 must hold the permit for six months and complete 65 hours of supervised driving before the road test.
How to pass
- The knowledge test has 18 multiple-choice questions.
- You need 15 correct answers to pass.
- If you fail, you may retake the test the following business day.
- The test is available in written and audio formats in many languages on request at Driver License Centers.
- This exam simulation uses the same 18 questions and 15 correct answers needed to pass.
Study tips
- Study Chapter 2 (signals, signs and pavement markings) and Chapter 3 (learning to drive) of the manual closely: the test covers traffic signs, Pennsylvania driving laws and safe driving practices.
- Memorize Pennsylvania’s distinctive numbers: a 4-second following distance, 15 mph school zones, 4 feet when passing a bicycle, and 10 feet from a stopped school bus.
- Learn sign shapes: only STOP is an octagon, only the no-passing sign is a pennant and only the school sign is a pentagon.
- Use the practice sets to drill signs, parking and license rules before taking the exam simulation.
Pennsylvania rules that often surprise new drivers
- Headlights must be on in every posted work zone, day or night, and whenever your wipers are on because of the weather.
- Under the Steer Clear law you must move to a lane not next to an emergency response area, or slow down if you cannot.
- Junior drivers may not drive from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. without a parent or guardian, except for documented work or service.
- Drivers under 21 are considered under the influence at a blood alcohol level of .02 or more.
- Failing to stop for a school bus with red lights flashing brings a 60-day suspension and 5 points.
