About the real exam
To get a learner’s license in Florida you must be at least 15, complete an approved driver education course (Driver Education/Traffic Safety, required since July 1, 2025), and pass the vision screening and the Class E Knowledge Exam. (The 2023 handbook still names the older TLSAE course; Florida Statutes s. 322.1615 now requires driver education instead.)
The exam can be taken at a driver license service center, through a school driver education program, or with an FLHSMV-approved third-party provider. Applicants under 18 may take it online through an approved provider.
The current official handbook is revision 08/2023. FLHSMV notes that it does not reflect laws passed after that date, so key legal numbers in these questions were also checked against the current Florida Statutes.

Study tips
- Learn Florida’s distances: no parking within 15 feet of a hydrant, 30 feet of a stop sign or 50 feet of a railroad crossing; never stop on the tracks or within 15 feet of a railroad crossing; stay 500 feet behind a responding fire truck; and give 3 feet when passing a bicycle.
- Memorize the minor curfews: 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. at 16 and 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. at 17.
- Know the Move Over Law: change lanes, or slow to 20 mph under the limit, and 5 mph where the limit is 20 or less.
- Use the practice sets to drill signs, license rules and DUI laws before taking the full exam simulation.
Florida rules that often surprise new drivers
- You must remove the keys before leaving a parked vehicle.
- Drivers who are slower than traffic must leave the left lane when a faster vehicle comes up behind them.
- Florida’s Move Over Law also protects ordinary disabled vehicles with hazard lights on.
- A DUI conviction stays on your Florida driving record for 75 years.
- When a school bus stops on the other side of a divided road, you may keep going only when the two directions are separated by a raised median, a physical barrier or an unpaved strip at least 5 feet wide; painted lines do not count.
