About the real exam
The New York written test covers road rules, safe driving techniques, road signs, and the alcohol and drug laws that apply to drivers. A vision test is also required.
The Class D test is available in several languages, either on a touch-screen station or on paper. Students at least 15 years and 11 months old can also take the test at participating high schools through the Online Knowledge Test Application (OKTA) program.
Passing both tests and paying the fees gets you a learner permit. Practice driving must be supervised by a licensed driver aged 21 or older sitting in the front seat.
How to pass
- The written test asks 20 questions.
- You need 14 or more correct answers out of 20 to pass.
- You must also answer at least two of the four road sign questions correctly, even if your overall score is 14 or more.
- The vision test requires 20/40 vision in one or both eyes, with or without glasses or contact lenses.
- This exam simulation follows the same rules: 20 questions including exactly 4 road sign questions, with 14 correct overall and 2 of the 4 sign questions needed to pass.
Study tips
- Learn the road signs in Chapter 4 first: failing the sign questions fails the whole test.
- Use the road sign practice set until you can answer every sign question without hesitating.
- Memorize New York’s distinctive rules: no turns on red in New York City unless a sign allows it, 55 mph when no limit is posted, and stopping for school buses even across a divided highway.
- Review every mistake and the manual chapter it cites before retaking the exam simulation.
New York rules that often surprise new drivers
- School buses with flashing red lights require you to stop even when the bus is across a divided highway.
- Turning on a red light is not allowed in New York City unless a sign permits it.
- U-turns are prohibited in school zones.
- Under the Zero Tolerance law, a driver under 21 with a BAC of .02 to .07 has the license suspended for six months.
- Speeding fines double in work zones even when no workers are present.
Frequently asked questions
How many questions are on the New York permit test?
The written test has 20 questions. You must answer at least 14 correctly, including at least two of the four road sign questions.
Can I fail the test even if I get 14 questions right?
Yes. If you answer fewer than two of the four road sign questions correctly, you fail even with 14 or more correct answers overall.
Who can supervise me with a learner permit?
Someone aged 21 or older who is licensed for that type of vehicle and sits in the front seat. Junior permit holders in New York City and on Long Island have extra limits on who may supervise and when they may drive; see the regional chart in Chapter 1 of the manual.
