Ohio BMV Permit Practice Test (TIPIC)

Prepare for the Ohio knowledge test for a Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC). Every question is written from the official Ohio Driver Manual published by the Ohio Department of Public Safety and cites the section it comes from.

Choose how to practice

  • All 88 questions, with the answer and explanation after each one.

  • 40 random questions. You need 30 correct to pass.

  • Traffic lights, sign colors and shapes, and lane markings. 14 questions, with the answer and explanation after each one.

  • TIPIC limits, driver education, points, insurance and suspensions. 20 questions, with the answer and explanation after each one.

  • BAC limits, test refusals, OVUAC and phone rules. 11 questions, with the answer and explanation after each one.

About the real exam

Before you can practice driving in Ohio you must pass a vision screening and a knowledge test, then buy a TIPIC from a Deputy Registrar office no more than 60 days later. You can take both tests once you are 15 and a half.

You can take the knowledge test at a BMV exam station or at some Deputy Registrar offices, or online through BMV Online Services. Online testing is limited to two attempts in six months.

Drivers under 21 must also finish a driver education course and log 50 hours of supervised practice, 10 of them at night, before the driving test.

How to pass

  • The knowledge test has 40 multiple-choice questions.
  • You need a score of 75%, which is 30 correct answers out of 40, to pass.
  • After a failed attempt you must wait one day; in person you may test once per day with no overall limit.
  • The test is offered in English, Spanish, Arabic, Somali, Russian, Chinese, French, Japanese, Haitian Creole and American Sign Language. For any other language, you may bring your own interpreter by appointment at a Driver Exam Station.
  • This exam simulation uses the same format: 40 questions with 30 correct answers needed to pass.

Study tips

  • Study Sections 2 through 10 of the manual: the BMV says these are the sections the knowledge test is based on.
  • Learn Ohio’s numbers: 100 feet to signal, 10 feet from a hydrant, 20 feet from a crosswalk, 15 to 50 feet from a railroad crossing and 3 feet when passing a bicycle.
  • Know the TIPIC limits by age, especially the midnight to 6 a.m. rule for drivers aged 16 and 17.
  • Use the practice sets to drill signs, license rules and alcohol laws before you take the exam simulation.

Ohio rules that often surprise new drivers

  • Drivers under 18 may not use electronic devices behind the wheel at all, hands-free included, except for navigation or emergency calls.
  • On highways with at least four lanes, only traffic moving the same way as a stopped school bus has to stop.
  • A dark traffic signal during a power outage is treated as a four-way stop, unless a police officer is directing traffic.
  • Refusing a chemical test brings a suspension that stays in place even if you are later acquitted of OVI.
  • Studded tires are allowed only from November 1 through April 15.
