About this test
The O*NET® Interest Profiler sorts work into six interest areas: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising and Conventional. From their initials, the six areas are often called RIASEC. The Short Form has ten activities for each area.
You simply mark the activities you would like to do. Your three highest areas give a starting point for exploring careers that match your interests.
The test takes about five minutes. Your answers stay in your browser; they are not sent to us.
The 60 activities and the six interest-area definitions are reproduced unchanged from the O*NET® materials, and each area is scored as on the paper form: one point for every activity you check. How the answers are collected and the scores displayed on this page, and the explanations around them, are our own and are not part of the O*NET® Interest Profiler.
How your results are calculated
- For each activity, choose “Check: I would like to do this” or “Leave unchecked”, just as you would tick or skip it on the paper form.
- Your score for each area is the number of its ten activities you checked, shown as a percentage (for example, 7 of 10 is 70%).
- The area with the highest score is your primary interest; the next two are your second and third interests.
- If two or more areas tie for the highest score, they are shown together. As the O*NET® score report suggests, choose the one whose activities you think fit you best.
Tips for honest results
- Do not think about how much education or training an activity needs, or how much money it pays. Only ask yourself whether you would like doing it.
- Judge each activity on its own, even if you have never tried it.
- Check only the activities you would really like to do, not ones you would merely put up with.
- Use your top three areas together: careers often combine more than one interest.
After the test: Job Zones and careers
The official O*NET® score report pairs your interests with a Job Zone: the amount of education, training and experience a career needs, from Job Zone 1 (little or no preparation) to Job Zone 5 (extensive preparation, usually including graduate school).
It suggests looking at careers that match both your primary interest and the Job Zone you have now or plan to reach, then learning more about them on My Next Move (mynextmove.org).
What this test is not
Interests show the kind of work you like, not what you are able to do. A high score is not a prediction of success in any job.
This test is for self-understanding only. It is not a psychological assessment, and it should not be used on its own to make decisions about hiring or education.
